The First Peoples’ Cultural Council announces $5.4 million to be delivered this year to support 16 projects that conserve, repair and develop B.C. First Nations heritage infrastructure.
The First Peoples’ Cultural Council (FPCC) is excited to announce the recipients of the Heritage Infrastructure Program (HIP) funding supported by the BC150 Time Immemorial fund. The First Peoples’ Cultural Foundation (FPCF) received this funding to support projects that promote reconciliation, diversity and inclusion. FPCC is administering $5.4 million from this fund to support 16 B.C. First Nations through HIP. FPCC is providing multi-year funding and ongoing support until projects are completed in 2024.
“This funding is vital to ensure Indigenous heritage in B.C. is protected for future generations,” said Karen Aird, FPCC Heritage Program Manager. “This investment enables First Nations communities to lead work to safeguard their cultural spaces and heritage collections, and demonstrates the urgent need for long term, sustainable funding to protect First Nations heritage.”
HIP supports First Nations communities in B.C. to safeguard and celebrate their heritage through projects ranging from new infrastructure development, to upgrades and improvements to existing spaces. Investing in the protection and development of heritage infrastructure supports First Nations communities to be the tellers and keepers of their own stories. By respecting and supporting Indigenous ways of knowing and being, FPCC’s Heritage Program upholds the safeguarding, transmission and revitalization of B.C. First Nations heritage.
“[The funding] is crucial in our long-term work to create a safer, sacred historical cemetery that allows us to protect, honor and show respect to those who are buried there,” said George Chaffee, Councilor of kʷikʷəƛ̓əm First Nation. “I am very proud to be leading this project and to be giving a voice to our Elders and Ancestors so that their lives are remembered not only for today, but for generations to come.”
The Kwikwetlem Cemetery restoration project is one of the 16 projects funded through FPCC’s HIP.
