New! Language Nest Toolkit

February 9, 2023

The Language Nest Toolkit is a collection of resources for language nest programs in First Nations communities.

We have a new resource to support language program development for young learners with the Language Nest Toolkit! This online and pdf resource contains a variety of practical resources to help with the day-to-day running of a language nest, as well as information and links to Indigenous language immersion programs worldwide.

Language nests are language immersion programs for pre-school children. If you are currently running a language nest or considering starting a language nest this resource provides tools and information on the following:

  • Teaching approaches and methods
  • Planning and curriculum building
  • Language assessments and aquisition
  • Funding sources

Each language is at the root of a unique culture, which connects us to the land, to traditional knowledge, to our stories and the words of our ancestors. Immersion programs are one of the best ways to bring these languages into all aspects of daily life.

Here at the First Peoples’ Cultural Council (FPCC), we continue to develop tools and resources to support B.C. First Nations communities in their language revitalization efforts. FPCC supports language nests with funding, resources and training through the Pathways to Language Revitalization Program.

In 2023 we continue to share language revitalization resources and stories to celebrate the United Nations Decade of Indigenous Languages! British Columbia is home to an astounding 34 First Nations languages – more than half of all Indigenous languages in Canada and the next decade provides an opportunity to continue to efforts and bring attention to the need for more support for Indigenous language revitalization programs around the world. Learn more about the Decade here.

First Peoples’ Cultural Council is grateful to have our home in the beautiful traditional unceded territory of the W̱SÁNEĆ Nation people, in the village of W̱JOȽEȽP. We have an additional satellite office at Tk’emlups within the traditional territory of the Secwepemc people. Our leadership and staff are honoured to travel, conduct our work and provide support throughout Indigenous homelands across what is now called British Columbia and beyond.
