We are now collecting Language Status Assessment (LSA) community surveys for the 2026 Report on the Status of B.C. First Nations Languages.
What is a Language Status Assessment?
A Language Status Assessment is a survey to help communities track the progress of their language activities. For communities already providing language programming, it can assist with finding which strategies are resulting in the best outcomes and show areas that may need more support. Communities that are not yet providing language programming can use the information to show a baseline and decide where it might be best to get started.
Doing a language status assessment is the first step in developing a language revitalization plan which can guide a community’s program development. A language plan provides a strategic road map for how a community will achieve a unified vision for language revitalization.
The First Peoples’ Cultural Council (FPCC) supports this work by publishing the Report on the Status of B.C. First Nations Languages every four years, since 2010. The report shares the health of each language across B.C. and highlights stories of community members seeing their languages thrive. FPCC uses this report to help governments and funders understand that investment in languages is not only effective but that long-term sustainable support is needed to help language initiatives grow.
Does my community need to complete an LSA?
We ask First Nations communities in B.C. to fill out an LSA once every four years. We are now collecting surveys for the 2026 Status Report and a representative from your community has been contacted. If you have applied for funding for 2025-26, a completed LSA is required.
The deadline to submit an LSA is April 1, 2025.
Where do I complete the LSA?
LSA surveys are filled out on our online Grant Portal.
If your community or organization previously submitted an LSA, you can log in to the portal and view your previous LSA under “My Project History” or you can contact us for a copy. A Word version of the LSA is also available in the application to assist with drafting the information before entering it on the portal.
Questions?
If you have any questions about the FPCC Language Status Assessment, please contact Suzanne at LSA@fpcc.ca or (604) 328-1210.
Thank you for your support
We are enormously grateful for everyone’s participation as B.C. is the only province that has been providing a public report on First Nations languages for this length of time. With your support, we are proud to be a leader in this work in Canada.
FPCC will provide an honorarium in recognition of the time required to complete the LSA. Note that only one honorarium per community is available. If you have not been contacted by email, please check with us before filling out an LSA on behalf of your community.
