FPCC’s Braided Knowledge grant provides up to $25,000 in funding to support projects that revitalize and focus on the connected nature of B.C. First Nations arts, languages and heritage.
Braided Knowledge: Weaving B.C. First Nations’ Knowledge Through Generations is a unique grant in Canada. It weaves themes from language, arts and heritage to support a holistic approach to cultural revitalization. Projects must have a mentorship component to ensure the transfer of cultural skills and knowledge from expert Knowledge Holders, fluent speakers and artists.
Mentors like Elder Minnie Kenoras are sharing what they know through a Braided Knowledge grant to the Living with the Land Foundation in Secwépemc Nation. She is careful to teach the importance of protocols such as thanking the plants being gathered, offering tobacco, sage or water. She taught activities like harvesting birch bark which is a yearly activity in the Spring and early Summer when the sap is running.
“She [Minnie Kenoras, Neskonlith First Nation] is incredibly devoted to her people and passing on her knowledge to coming generations. She is a shining star to all who are fortunate enough to meet her and especially get to know her.” – Patricia White, administrator with Living with the Land Foundation
This is one example of how Mentors can be involved in Braided Knowledge projects.
