Truth, Healing and Reconciliation through Community Events

September 30th is The National Day for Truth and Reconciliation, also known as Orange Shirt Day.

At FPCC, we remember the children who never returned home, the Survivors of residential schools and their families and communities. We honour all those who have been affected by residential schools and continue to support those who seek truth, justice, healing and reconciliation.

For those looking to connect and reflect through community, we have compiled a list of events taking place across British Columbia on and around September 30th. All events offer free or pay-what-you-can admission.

B.C. Events for Truth and Reconciliation Day:

  1. Maple Ridge
    • Location: Memorial Peace Park in Maple Ridge 
    • Date and Time: Sun., Sept. 27, 9:30 am – 3:00 pm  
    • Event Details: Following an opening march, there will be: Indigenous guest speakers, cultural performances, over 50 Indigenous and local vendors and artisans, a community art project and more.

  2. Duncan
    • Location: Collective Space  
    • Date and Time: Tues., Sept. 29, 5:00 pm – 8:00pm  
    • Event Details: Join Support Network for Indigenous Women and Women of Colour for teachings, stories and connection. Food will be provided. Registration is required.

  3. Victoria
    • Location: Royal Athletic Park  
    • Date and Time: Wed., Sept. 30, 10:00 am  
    • Event Details: South Island Powwow – Through song and dance, we will celebrate traditional Indigenous cultures and resiliency.

  4. Vancouver
    • Location: Museum of North Vancouver (MONOVA) 
    • Date and Time: Wed., Sept. 30, 10:00 am – 5:00 pm   
    • Event Details: Visitors of all ages will be welcomed to engage in hands-on activities, guided tours and thoughtful games developed to inspire meaningful dialogue about the history of Indigenous rights.

  5. Quesnel
    • Location: Lhtako Dene Park  
    • Date and Time: Wed., Sept. 30, 10:00 am – 1:00 pm  
    • Event Details: This event is designed to promote awareness about the Indian residential school system and the multigenerational impact it has had on Indigenous communities for over a century.

  6. Penticton
    • Location: Safeway, 1301 Main St. #801 
    • Date and Time: Wed., Sept. 30, 10:00 am – 1:00 pm  
    • Event Details: This 2km walk is open to the public. Please wear orange, blue or green shirts to support the children, survivors and communities.

  7. Kelowna
    • Location: Okanagan Heritage Museum 
    • Date and Time: Wed., Sept. 30, 11:00 am – 4:00 pm  
    • Event Details: Truth and Reconciliation: (Un)learn with Kelowna Museums. Learn about the history and culture of the syilx people, both pre-contact and post-contact.

  8. Fort St. John 
    • Location: Fort St. John Friendship Society, 10208 95 Ave, Fort St. John 
    • Date and Time: Wed., Sept. 30, 11:00 am – 2:00 pm  
    • Event Details: Join the Fort St. John Friendship Society for a day of community gathering, guest speakers, traditional dancers, orange shirt decorating, a walk and a community BBQ.
