This program provides up to $180,000 in funding, technology and training to communities to support language revitalization using technology.
The Language Technology Program combines funding from the FirstVoices Program and Digitization Grant Initiative. Combining these programs into one means that communities now only complete one application and a single final report. The deadline to apply is January 17, 2022.
“Learning our language is very complex. We need lots of different tools to help us and the app and the website are exciting because they are a couple of more tools that we can use. We are very thankful for the support we received from FirstVoices.” – Debbie Leighton-Stephens, Sm̓algyax Program Support.
FirstVoices
First Voices is an online tool that communities use to document and share their language through a community site that includes alphabets, songs, stories, words and phrases as well as multimedia. This program provides access to state-of-the-art technologies, training and technical support.
Digitization
Digitization projects involve converting materials such as audio cassettes, reel-to-reel tapes, VHS tapes, text documents and more to a digital format. We provide grants, equipment and training to help communities digitize and organize these valuable resources.

Eligibility
This funding supports B.C. First Nations communities, governments, bands and tribal councils, Indigenous cultural, language and education centres, as well as urban Indigenous organizations.
Timeline
The application deadline is January 17, 2022. Projects must be implemented between July 2022 and June 2023.
Funding
Up to $80,000 is available for FirstVoices projects and up to $100,000 is available for digitization projects. Projects with smaller budgets are encouraged to apply. Applications for two years of programming are also welcome.
